DemChamps for College Students
Description
DemChamps is a structured learning and engagement program developed by Dementia India Alliance (DIA) to empower college students with knowledge, empathy, and practical skills to become informed advocates for dementia awareness and brain health.
As dementia continues to emerge as a significant public health and social challenge in India, young people play a critical role in shaping attitudes, reducing stigma, and fostering inclusive communities. DemChamps introduces students to the fundamentals of brain health and dementia, helping them understand the condition beyond myths and misconceptions—through a human, rights-based, and community-oriented lens.
The course combines expert video modules, quizzes, and reflective activities to build a strong foundation on:
-
Brain health and cognitive well-being
-
Types of dementia, early signs, and risk factors
-
Impact of dementia on individuals, families, and caregivers
-
Communication, empathy, and inclusion for persons living with dementia
-
Stigma reduction and the importance of dementia-friendly communities
A key focus of DemChamps is action-oriented learning. Students are encouraged to apply their knowledge through guided assignments, campus or community-based activities, and awareness initiatives. This experiential approach enables learners to translate understanding into meaningful engagement and social impact.
On successful completion, participants are recognized as Dementia Champions (DemChamps)—young leaders equipped to raise awareness, initiate conversations, support community screening and outreach efforts, and contribute to a dementia-aware society. The program also supports certification and institutional partnerships, enabling colleges to integrate DemChamps into co-curricular, extension, or service-learning frameworks.
Through DemChamps, Dementia India Alliance seeks to nurture a generation of informed, compassionate, and proactive youth who will champion brain health and dignity for persons living with dementia—today and in the future.
